ACTION PLAN OF THE WICHITA BAR ASSOCIATION
MANAGING PARTNERS DIVERSITY INITIATIVE 2014-2016

 

 INTRODUCTION

 

    In 2006, the Managing Partners Committee of the Wichita Bar Association developed and implemented an action plan to promote diversity in the Wichita legal community for recruiting and retaining under-represented groups in Wichita firms as associates and partners in significantly higher numbers in the past.

 

    As a result of the Action Plan, a number of efforts were launched. These efforts included annual meetings of the Managing Partners Committee to discuss Diversity efforts in Wichita, an annual Diversity seminar on relevant issues, dialogues with both Kansas law schools on promoting Wichita as a place to work and participation by Wichita firms in the Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair.

 

    These efforts have yielded progress, but more work remains to be done and we wish to recommit ourselves and broaden the definition of diversity to be more inclusive. Therefore, in addition, and also consistent with the goals and objectives of the original Action Plan, the member firms acknowledge that efforts to promote diversity must reflect a definition of diversity that is broader than race or ethnicity. The member firms agree that diversity in its broadest sense” which the member firms commit to promote includes, without limitation, race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, marital status, age and veteran status.

 

    In addition to a broader definition of diversity, we renew our commitment to our original goal of promotion of diversity in our legal community, and will focus our efforts at retention, continued recruitment, and broader adoption and implementation of best practices as identified by our member firms. While best practices are firm specific and up to the individual firm, the member firms overarching commitment is to the goal of increasing diversity in our profession and local legal community.

 

    The areas of focus for the 2014-2016 Action Plan will include: Retention, Recruitment, and Education.
