Trauma - Informed Representation (Part 1)
1:05 - 1:55 p.m. (50 minutes) , presented by Jenna L. Driskell

This hour will explore how trauma, and traumatized individuals, are impacted by the legal system and, of course, how they also impact the legal system. We will explore ways that lawyers, and others in the legal system, can become trauma-informed or provide trauma-informed services. We will talk about building relationships with traumatized children and youth and what those lawyer-client relationships can look like if built from a trauma-informed framework.

Break 1:55 - 2:05 p.m.

Trauma - Informed Representation (Part 2)
2:05 — 2:55 p.m. (50 minutes), presented by Jenna L. Driskell

This second hour will be a continuation of how trauma, and traumatized individuals are impacted by the legal system and how they impact the legal system.

Break 2:55 - 3:00 p.m.

When CINC Appeals Happen and How to Avoid Them Without Sacrificing the Client’s and the Child’s Best Interests
3:00 — 3:50 p.m. (50 minutes - Ethics) presented by Hon. Kevin M. Smith

Judge Smith will discuss the limited appeal rights for Child In Need of Care cases, the standards of review, and what attorneys need to do to make sure their clients’ due process rights are preserved in light of these statutory restrictions. He will also discuss federal statutes that impact CINC cases in state court.
