The Woozling for 50/50 Parenting Time & the Actual Research Data:  Implications for Best Interests Determinations & Family Lawyers
12:30 – 2:10 p.m. (100 minutes), presented by Bud Dale
Each year Kansas legislators face proposals for equal parenting time presumptions. This past year, proponents of a 50/50 statute claimed recent research reviews supported their proposal. But, a close look at the claimed reviews revealed problems about the quality of the data and the integrity of the claims. “Woozling” describes the process of making claims that research findings reflect more support for an advocacy position than they actually do. Dr. Dale and his colleagues have conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of the empirical studies comparing children’s adjustment in shared parenting arrangements versus children’s adjustment in primary parent arrangements. This presentation will show this data and describe the implications of “what the research says” for best interests of the child determinations and family law practice.

Break 2:10 – 2:25 p.m.

2:25 – 3:15 p.m. (50 minutes, Ethics), presented by Professor Linda Elrod
As society, technology, and the “typical” family law client changes, lawyers are faced with new and ever-changing ethical challenges. Professor Elrod will discuss those new challenges, how to address them head-on in your practice, and the most common mistakes made by practitioners that result in ethical issues.
